GUWAHATI: Assam government on Monday approved Cattle and Buffalo Breeding Policy 2020 by which limit is placed on the cross breeding and only a certain percentage will be permissible.

Assam industry minister and government spokesperson, Chandra Mohan Patowary told ET, “Assam does not possess a high yielding milch breed of its own. The local cattle are of low genetic potential for milk production. So to achieve maximum level of productivity from our low productive cattle, cross breeding/ up gradation with recognised dairy breed was done.”

He added, “And to achieve that the state attempted to formulate a suitable policy for augmentation of the milk production. However now by the new policy we propose to cap on the cross breeding for domestic varieties to need to be protected.”

Revised Breeding Policy was established in the year 1998 with the cross breeding of Exotic jersey of high genetic merit with cattle of Assam to produce cross bred cattle with level of exotic inheritance.
